Happy Monday

Hi there! I missed you all last week. I was just way too busy! Hopefully things will be a tad calmer this week.

Thanksgiving was very nice. It was great to spend time with family. Not a lot of family made it to dinner this year. We still had a ton of food – turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, rolls, stuffing, meatballs, green beans, corn casserole, sweet potato pie, pea salad, deviled eggs, beans, pumpkin pie, peanut butter pie, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin rolls, and I’m sure I’m leaving a lot out!

I make pumpkin muffins every year. My grandfather and cousin love them so much so there’s no way I can get out of not making them. I will post the recipe later because they are so easy and quick!! They are also very, very good. I make the meatballs every year, too, which have become my dad’s and uncle’s favorite. They are super easy, too.

Friday my mom and I braved the crowds and went Black Friday shopping. It’s a tradition. We’ve been every year since I can remember! We don’t have anything that we just have to have, we just love to go. We ended up getting a lot of stuff this year. The longest we waited in any line was at Old Navy. The line was wrapped around the store and it took us 30 minutes to get to the registers! Every other store we went in was fine. There was no wait, no fighting, and everyone we saw was really friendly. Nothing like the Black Friday shoppers you see on the news.

While we were in line at Old Navy an older lady and her grandson were behind me. She started talking about how she got “Papa’s boots at a great deal at Payless” and how she just couldn’t get over the way kids danced nowadays. I don’t know exactly how the subject switched so fast. She just kept going on and on about everything! I was happy when she finally got out of line to go look for something else. I don’t mind talking to people, but come on. It was five in the morning and I was standing in a long line getting very hot and I didn’t have my coffee!

Now for the bad news.

Wednesday morning my husband went down to the basement to get something and saw water running across our floor.

He figured out that the pipe outside had burst somewhere so he had to find it and get it fixed before we had a huge mess. And a huge water bill! We finally figured out where the problem was after stepping in a puddle of water in our front yard. He dug a huge hole and found the pipe.

Gross! He thought he would just be able to fix that one part, however nothing works easily around here. He found out that he is going to have to replace the entire pipe that runs from the house to the water meter at the road. Luckily our front yard is not that big, but still a huge problem. He put a patch on it temporarily so we could use the water Thursday and Friday. Saturday it rained almost all day. It didn’t just rain – it poured! We had freezing rain in the morning that turned to a very cold rain later. So the pipe mess had to be put on hold.

Sunday after church, my husband worked on it all day. My daughter and I put up the Christmas decorations and I was running back and forth helping her with decorating and him with the pipe! He finally got the new pipe laid and everything was looking good. Until he found out that the end piece was not the one he needed and our hardware store had just closed. Nothing easy here!

So as I sit and write this post on this cloudy and cold windy Monday morning, we have no water. I have not been able to take a shower, so I’m not exactly a happy person right now. However, we have bottled water stacked up that we have left over from hurricane preparations, so I am able to have my coffee. And that makes me feel a little bit better.

I hope my American friends had a very nice Thanksgiving! I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!

  1. Well I’m glad you guys had a great Thanksgiving and black friday shopping. I totally understand the whole water pipe issue. So sorry you guys are dealing with this. It seems like its always something. We deal with the same things here and its never when the weather is nice and then the million trips back and forth to the hardware store. We live at lowes and home depot. I can tell people where everything is at, better than the people that work there. Its ridiculous! I hope he can get it fixed soon and I hope you have a better day!

    1. I’m glad you get it. It’s the exact same way here! I was so glad when they built a Lowe’s 5 minutes from us. It’s become our second home! I guess it’s never ending when you own a home. By the time everything is fixed my house will seem new! haha! Thank you so much!

      How was your trip home?

  2. So sorry to hear about your water troubles! You just don’t feel yourself when the basic necessities of life are taken away (water, lights, heat, etc). I hope everything goes back to normal soon! Sounds like you had an amazing Thanksgiving though…what a menu!

  3. I am happy that you had a great Thanksgiving and looking forward to seeing your recipes for pumpkin muffins and meatballs. My hubby and kids would go crazy for the pumpkin muffins. What did you get from Black Friday? My husband went crazy as usual. All I got two PJs for me. Hahhah I am glad that lady left you alone.

Sorry for the pipe any plumbing wor can break your bank easily. At least your husband is a handy person. I am sure he would fix it. Last month in our new house and it’s a pretty new house. We ended up spending $650 on a small plumbing job. I hate that. I hope your pipe will be up and running fast and you can take shower to be a happy person. I can’t imagine seeing you mad at all as you are such a nice soul.

    1. Thank you! I got half of my Christmas shopping done for my husband and daughter! I’m usually not this close to being done by now. 🙂 You reminded me that I forgot to get PJs!! haha!

I guess it’s never ending when you are a homeowner. It always seems to be one thing after another.

  4. Hey, Michelle, sounds like your Thanksgiving was wonderful. Those pumpkin muffins sound delicious. I love anything pumpkin. The pipe was definitely a distraction. It could have been worst the whole basement could have been flooded. Wow!! The cost that it could have been if you had to hire someone to do the work. Praise God your husband is very knowledgeable and doesn’t mind hard work. Such a blessing.

  5. Oh no, Michelle! What a tough disaster to have to endure! I hope everything is all fixed up for you now. It is tough to work without water. I am glad you had a stockpile of bottled water. We had a busted pipe as well. Thankfully it was outside and didn’t affect our water inside. I am not looking forward to the water bill. You can call and negotiate with them to possibly reduce sewer charges. My parents did that in their area when one of their sprinkler pipes busted. It will take the edge off the high water bill.
